Heat Pump Water Heaters

The water heater that
pays you back

A heat pump water heater doesn't make heat — it moves it, pulling warmth out of the air around it. That makes it up to 3–4x more efficient than a standard electric tank. And right now, LADWP customers can get up to $2,500 back on a qualifying install. We're certified to install them, and we handle the rebate paperwork.

Why Heat Pump?

It moves heat instead of making it

A standard electric water heater burns electricity to create heat from scratch. A heat pump water heater works like a refrigerator running in reverse — it captures heat that's already in the air and transfers it into your water. Same hot showers, a fraction of the electricity.

That's why California is putting real rebate money behind them: they're the most efficient way to heat water with electricity, and they pair beautifully with solar panels.

  • Up to 3–4x more efficient than standard electric tanks
  • Up to $2,500 LADWP rebate on qualifying installs
  • Dehumidifies and cools the space around it — a garage bonus
  • Pairs with solar PV for near-free hot water
  • The future-proof choice as California goes electric
"California is steadily moving homes away from gas appliances — new air-quality rules are already phasing in zero-emission water heating. Switching to a heat pump now means you choose the timing, capture the rebate, and skip the emergency scramble later."

The Money Part

How the LADWP rebate works

Rebate programs have rules — and paperwork mistakes are the #1 reason homeowners lose the money. We've been handling utility rebate paperwork since 2006.

Who qualifies

LADWP residential electric customers replacing a water heater with a qualifying ENERGY STAR heat pump model. Other utilities run their own programs that come and go — call us and we'll tell you what's live in your area today.

📋

What it takes

The rebate requires an itemized invoice, equipment certification, and a finalized building permit. Skip the permit, lose the rebate. We pull permits on every job — it's built into how we work.

🤝

What we do

We spec a qualifying unit, install it to code, pull and finalize the permit, and prepare the rebate documentation. You get the check without chasing the paperwork.

Rebate programs change and can sell out — amounts and eligibility are set by the utility, not by us. We'll confirm what's available for your address before you spend a dime.

Honest Talk

Is a heat pump water heater right for your home?

It's a brilliant system — in the right house. Here's how we evaluate yours.

📐

Space & placement

Heat pump units need air to pull heat from — a garage, basement, or utility room works great. We check clearances and placement options during the free estimate.

Electrical panel

Most units need a dedicated circuit. Many panels handle it fine; some need an upgrade. We assess yours upfront so there are no surprise costs mid-job.

🔄

If it's not the fit

Some homes are better served by tankless or a quality tank — and we'll say so. We install every type of water heater, so we have zero reason to force the wrong one on you.

Common Questions

Heat pump questions, answered

How much can I really save?
A heat pump water heater uses up to 3–4x less electricity than a standard electric tank for the same hot water. If you're switching from an old electric tank, the operating savings are significant — and the LADWP rebate can cover a major chunk of the upfront cost.
Can I replace my gas water heater with a heat pump?
Yes — gas-to-heat-pump conversions are where California's electrification push is headed, and air-quality rules for gas water heaters are tightening. We evaluate your electrical panel as part of the free estimate to give you the full picture, including any panel work needed.
Are heat pump water heaters loud?
They produce a low hum similar to a refrigerator — a non-issue in a garage or utility room, which is where most SoCal installs go. Placement is part of what we assess in the free estimate.
Do they work when it's cold?
In Southern California, absolutely. Heat pump water heaters pull heat from ambient air and perform best in mild climates — ours is close to ideal. Most units also have backup electric elements for heavy-demand days.
How long do they last?
Typically 13–15 years with basic maintenance — longer than a standard tank. We'll walk you through the warranty options on qualifying ENERGY STAR models.
Is the rebate guaranteed?
Rebates are set and paid by the utility, and programs can change or sell out. What we guarantee is our side: qualifying equipment, a finalized permit, and complete, correct documentation — the three things that determine whether a rebate pays out. We'll confirm current availability for your address before you commit.
